The white building is the Peponi Hotel.  I visited
Lamu for a long weekend while working at the
American Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya.  Lamu
has been designated a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.  It is perhaps the best preserved
of the old Arab trading ports on the Swahili
coast of East Africa.  There are no cars on the
island and all travel is by boat, by donkey, or on
foot.  In fact, the trip from the airport to the hotel
is by boat.                                  Photo: 2002
